Program Description

Hyperlipidemia is a significant contributor to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. It is estimated that fewer than 50% of patients with high cholesterol receive treatment; furthermore, fewer than 35% of patients receiving treatment achieve adequate cholesterol levels with therapy. Statins are used most frequently as lipid-lowering therapy, but their use is associated with poor adherence and adverse effects that contribute to patients discontinuing therapy. Pharmacists have an important role in identifying patients who may benefit from the use of PCSK9 inhibitors, for example, individuals who do not achieve appropriate cholesterol levels with statin monotherapy. This program will familiarize pharmacists with the most recent guideline updates to provide a patient-centered approach to hyperlipidemia management with a focus on the role of PCSK9 inhibitors. Real-world data analyzing safety and cost efficacy of PCSK9 inhibitors will also be presented to equip pharmacists in making clinical interventions to ensure the optimal management of patients with hyperlipidemia.
