Program Description
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) results from a genetic mutation which causes degeneration of motor neurons and rapid, progressive muscle weakness. Although SMA is rare, it has a high mortality rate and is associated with substantial clinical, psychosocial, and economic burden. Early diagnosis and treatment initiation is imperative to the management of SMA to maintain patient quality of life. The use of disease-modifying therapies (DMT) in SMA has the potential to change existing treatment protocols, normalize development, and increase survival. Managed care pharmacists are central in developing strategies for appropriate utilization management of DMT. Coverage criteria developed should consider clinical evidence including long-term efficacy and safety data, practice guidelines, as well as drug-specific characteristics such as indication, approved age range, drug administration, and safety concerns. This program will highlight the burden of SMA, present clinical data on new and approved DMT, and discuss approaches to increase access to SMA therapy to improve patient outcomes and reduce health care resource burden.
