Program Description

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is an inherited cardiovascular disease that remains underdiagnosed. In HCM, the left ventricle becomes smaller, stiffer, and unable to fill with blood, causing a reduction in the heart’s ability to pump and resulting in symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness, dyspnea, and syncope. Traditional therapies such as beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, and disopyramide are used for symptom control. However, in recent years, the discovery of the genetic pathology of HCM has led to the development of several targeted therapies with the first cardiac myosin inhibitor, mavacamten, receiving FDA approval in 2022 and another agent, aficamten under investigation. As integral members of the health care team, pharmacists must understand goals of therapy with novel agents, including improving exercise capacity and relieving hypercontractility symptoms, and the potential role of these agents in improving clinical outcomes in patients with HCM. This webinar will review guidelines for the management of HCM and clinical safety and efficacy data of novel and emerging therapies for HCM to equip pharmacists to educate patients and other health care team members about advances in HCM treatment and management.
