Program Description
Desmoid tumors (DTs) are a type of nonmetastasizing, locally aggressive, fibroblastic proliferative soft-tissue sarcoma. DTs can occur at any site, but most commonly appear in the abdominal wall and/or limbs. These tumors are often unpredictable and may remain indolent for some individuals while growing excessively in others, obstructing vital structures and organs and contributing to mortality. The burden of disease in DTs includes both delays in diagnosis and misdiagnosis, which may impact treatment initiation. Recurrence after surgical resection may occur in up to 90% of patients, so systemic therapies are needed as alternatives for these patients. Recently, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have shown to be effective in treating progressive, unresectable DTs, and novel therapies are being investigated for DTs. This article will review evidence-based approaches and clinical data for the use of TKIs and novel therapies in the step-wise treatment of DTs, with attention to treatment decisions in individual patients. Managed care professionals should be aware of the current and emerging treatment options for DTs to inform patients and other health care providers of treatment access and approaches to reduce burden of disease.
