Program Description
Hereditary angioedema is a complex inflammatory disease affecting limbs, face, gastrointestinal tract, and airways, and its associated swelling can be potentially fatal. Although rare, due to several presenting types of HAE and its nonspecific signs and symptoms of allergic reaction, HAE can often go unrecognized and undiagnosed. Therefore, early diagnosis through laboratory testing and individualized treatment plans based on disease-specific patterns are necessary in the management of HAE. Additionally, the unpredictability of HAE attacks can cause not only physical stress but also psychological stress for patients. Managed care professionals and pharmacists should recognize patients’ need for HAE prophylaxis in addition to acute, on-demand rescue therapies for serious HAE attacks. The availability of newer, long-term prophylactic treatments can reduce fear of attacks and improve patient quality of life. It is imperative that patients are informed about risks of adverse effects of therapy and the importance of adherence to prophylactic regimens. However, despite their efficacy, these treatment strategies are associated with high costs, largely depending on administration frequency, cost per dose, and site of care. This activity will examine how managed care pharmacists can assist in providing individualized, cost-effective treatment options and contribute to the coordination of care for patients with HAE.
