Topics

Cardiology

Coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease (CAD/PAD) are 2 of the most prevalent types of cardiovascular disease. Prevention efforts largely focus on lifestyle modifications, such as smoking cessation and maintaining a healthy diet, and treating comorbid conditions or underlying risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and stroke. Patients with CAD/PAD are at higher risk of major adverse cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and death. Antithrombotic therapy for the management of patients with CAD/PAD is recommended in multiple clinical guidelines, but choice of therapy largely depends on individual patient-specific factors. Pharmacists in both community and health-system settings are in an ideal position to engage with patients with CAD/PAD about medication adherence and make evidence-based interventions to improve outcomes and reduce risk for complications. This activity will include interactive patient case simulations to allow pharmacists to assess, counsel, and provide recommendations for patients with CAD/PAD.
