Program Description
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder with life-threatening complications that can lead to hospitalizations and poor quality of life for patients. Complications of SCD include vaso-occlusive events, which can affect multiple organ systems and increase disease severity, resulting in hospitalizations. Treatment approaches for patients with SCD include pain management, preventive care, and routine health management. As not all patients with SCD tolerate or respond to standard-of-care treatments, newer therapies that address the underlying pathophysiology are promising. Reducing vaso-occlusive events and associated hospitalizations for patients with SCD should be of utmost consideration for managed care professionals when reviewing institutional protocols and facilitating patient access to therapies for SCD. This activity will explore challenges and complexities of managing patients with SCD, as well as present cost-efficacy data for managed care professionals to utilize when seeking to optimize healthcare resource utilization.
