Program Description
Though atopic dermatitis (AD) has historically been considered a childhood disease, estimates suggest up to more than 1.5 million adults in the United States live with moderate to severe AD. When AD is inadequately controlled, it can result in unnecessary and significant clinical and economic burden for patients, and it can especially impact patient quality of life. Further investigation into the inflammatory pathways that trigger AD has contributed to expanding treatment options, such as those targeting the Janus kinase and interleukin pathways, which are now known to be implicated in AD. Several small molecules and biologics are in development and offer new options and different modes of administration for patients who have AD. Specialty pharmacists should be familiar with existing treatment guidelines and how new therapies may affect the current treatment landscape. This activity will review current therapies with a focus on emerging agents for moderate to severe AD and equip specialty pharmacists to apply safe and effective targeted therapies to treatment plans to improve care for patients with AD.
