Program Description
The severity of influenza in the United States can vary extensively from season to season. While complications due to the influenza virus can affect anyone, certain patient populations are more vulnerable to developing influenza-related complications, increasing risk of hospitalization and even death, which pose a serious burden in the management of patients with influenza. To minimize these burdens, health-system pharmacists have critical roles in ensuring the prompt treatment of influenza with antivirals and counseling patients. This activity will review how pharmacists can recognize patients who are at increased risk for complications as well as strategies for educating other health care providers and patients on the importance of the safe and efficacious use of antivirals in the management of influenza.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Examine the pathogenesis and modes of transmission of influenza, as well as factors contributing to greater risk of influenza-related complications in certain patient populations
- Compare the mechanisms of action, dosing, clinical benefits, and adverse effects associated with the antivirals recommended by the CDC for the influenza season
- Identify the role of health-system pharmacists in making clinical recommendations and in counseling patients about the use of antivirals for the prevention and treatment of the influenza virus
