Program Description
Indications for use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are expanding, and these agents are now widely recommended for treatment of multiple malignancies. Pharmacists must be aware of biomarkers indicating possible treatment benefit as well as potential development of immune-related adverse events (irAEs). The types of AEs associated with ICI therapy differ from AEs related to traditional chemotherapy and require different management strategies. Pharmacists are becoming more capable in recognizing and treating more common irAEs. However, it is important that pharmacists also gain similar knowledge about less common but serious irAEs that have not been as frequently discussed. Pharmacists in multiple practice settings within the health system must be well versed in recognizing irAEs and providing patient education and assessment regarding irAEs across a variety of education formats, including the emerging field of telemedicine. This activity will review approaches to predict and manage irAEs and introduce strategies oncology pharmacists can integrate into future remote patient encounters.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Explain how mechanisms of action of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) relate to the pathophysiology and development of less common immune-related adverse events (irAEs)
• Illustrate the importance of biomarkers in predicting ICI efficacy and toxicity
• Compare the features of less common irAEs, including incidence, timing of appearance, and management strategies
• Identify methods by which telemedicine can overcome barriers to cancer care, specifically with regard to ICI therapy
