Program Description
The etiology, pathogenesis, and staging of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is often complex and influences treatment decisions. Significant racial and ethnic disparities exist in the underlying causes of HCC and its subsequent treatment planning, with hepatitis B contributing to disease in Asian Americans, hepatitis C in Blacks, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in Hispanics and non-Hispanic Whites. Approval of immune checkpoint inhibitors and combinations of these agents with vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors mark significant advances in the treatment of HCC; however, these regimens can be resource intensive. Access and affordability of therapy remain barriers for patients with HCC, and managed care pharmacists must recognize racial and socioeconomic disparities. This discussion will highlight recently approved and emerging therapeutic options in the HCC treatment landscape and address resource utilization strategies for managed care professionals to consider when determining the most appropriate management plans for patients.
