Program Description
Several assessment tools can be used to measure patient risk for osteoporosis and for osteoporosis-related fractures. Without confirmed diagnosis of osteoporosis, patients cannot receive effective pharmacologic treatment and can experience increased risk of fracture. As pharmacists are in frequent contact with patients, they are ideally positioned to review patients’ medical histories, medication list, and other factors that may increase risk for osteoporosis. They can also promote use of nonpharmacologic agents, such as calcium and vitamin D supplements, to ensure optimal bone health as part of osteoporosis prevention. Prior to initiating pharmacologic therapy, consideration must be given to the patient’s risk and fracture history, as well as limitations to administration and patient tolerance of specific medications. Although bisphosphonates are typically first-line therapies for postmenopausal osteoporosis, in 2020, the AACE/ACE guidelines were updated to include the recently approved medications for osteoporosis treatment and management as well as new recommendations for use of assessment tools to evaluate osteoporosis and fracture risk. This is the second module in the 4-part curriculum series and will review clinical trial data for new and emerging agents and their recommended use as incorporated in the updated 2020 AACE/ACE guidelines.
