Expanding the Role of Pharmacists in Optimizing Skin Care and Outcomes in Skin Conditions Through OTC Options: The Role of the Skin Microbiome, Ceramides, and Antioxidants (Pharmacy Technician Credit)

The skin is considered to be the body’s first line of defense. However, several inflammatory conditions may cause damage to the skin barrier and compromise its ability to protect against dermatologic diseases. As front-line health care providers, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are likely to encounter patients seeking information about OTC skin care products that are available for common skin conditions and should be prepared to answer questions about dermatological health and protection. This learning series includes 4 webinars and 2 podcasts that will each review the clinical burden and impact of various dermatologic conditions, including acne, atopic dermatitis, sun protection and photosensitivity, and diabetes-related skin and xerosis, as well as the current American Academy of Dermatology guidelines for their management and treatment using prebiotic ingredients and ceramide-containing cleansers and moisturizers. Pharmacy technicians who complete all 6 activities in this resource center will receive a certificate of completion demonstrating their dedication to improving patient education about these skin disorders, identifying potential triggers, and assisting with therapies to effectively manage them while also restoring and maintaining the skin barrier function.
