Program Description
Obesity is a complex, chronic disease that is associated with numerous comorbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) and dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)/GLP-1 RA therapies are used in the management of obesity and associated cardiometabolic risk. These therapies promote weight loss through multiple mechanisms, including regulation of gastrointestinal hormones and delayed gastric emptying, resulting in reduced appetite and caloric intake. However, delayed gastric emptying can lead to gastrointestinal adverse effects and decreased caloric intake can lead to deficiencies in essential nutrients. Patients receiving GLP-1 RA and GIP/GLP-1 RA therapies may require individualized nutritional counseling and support to ensure long-term treatment persistence. This panel discussion reviews the identification, counseling, and monitoring of patients receiving GLP-1 RA and GIP/GLP-1 RA therapies, with an emphasis on the pharmacist’s role in nutritional assessment and management. The discussion features an expert interview with a nutritionist who provides an interdisciplinary perspective on integrating nutritional support into pharmacist-led care for patients receiving GLP-1 RA and GIP/GLP-1 RA therapies.
