Program Description
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic inflammatory disease of the joints and synovial fluid that commonly affects the hands and feet, but it can also affect the skin, heart, lungs, and eyes. RA can range from a self-limiting disease to a chronic, progressive condition leading to eventual disability, and it can significantly impact patients’ quality of life. Several agents have traditionally been used, but some therapies fail to achieve sustained disease remission in many patients, indicating a need for new agents with different mechanisms of action. Managed care professionals will need to understand the various scales to measure disease severity of patients with RA and develop treatment protocols that support the use of biologic agents accordingly. This activity will highlight data for investigational and recently approved agents for treatment of RA so managed care professionals can ensure optimization of care and access to new therapies for patients as they enter the newer treatment landscape for RA.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Examine the prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the US population, the various scales to measure severity, and the burden of this progressive disease.
• Document the safety and efficacy data of recently approved and investigational biologics for the treatment of RA.
• Investigate treatment protocols that encourage optimal use and access to newer agents to individualize patient care and allocate healthcare resources.
