Program Description
The common presentations of primary immunodeficiency disease (PIDD) often lead to delays in diagnosis. Up to 400 types of PIDD have been identified, with signs and symptoms including persistent, systemic infections that can become life-threatening and require hospitalization. The majority of patients receive lifelong immune globulin (Ig) therapy to manage PIDD, and pharmacists should be familiar with the variety of formulations available. Managed care professionals must also understand the nuances of available Ig products, as differences in manufacturing process, sodium and sugar content, and routes of administration must all be considered based on patient-specific factors. Much of the costs for treatment of PIDD stem from antibiotic use and emergent treatment for infections that often requires hospitalizations, but initiation of Ig therapy has the potential to reduce hospitalizations and decrease healthcare expenses for both patients and payers. The distinct properties of different formulations of Ig will be reviewed, with a special focus on optimize Ig therapy for patients with different types of PIDD.
