Program Description
The prevalence and severity of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) has increased in past years due to improvements in the process and therefore utilization of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The wide range of symptoms and organ systems affected by cGVHD has significant negative impacts on patients’ quality of life following HSCT. Early identification of cGVHD, organ¬-specific management, and prompt initiation of treatment to reduce symptoms and downregulate immune system response is essential to the supportive care paradigm of cGVHD. Unfortunately, some patients experience failure to first-line therapy with corticosteroids. This webinar will explore clinical data, including adverse effects, for recently approved and emerging agents for the treatment of steroid-refractory cGVHD. Patient counseling video vignettes incorporated within this activity will familiarize pharmacists with patient- and drug-specific characteristics to consider when initiating second-line and refractory therapies for patients with cGVHD. Resources to support the role of the pharmacist in promoting medication adherence and addressing potential barriers to nonadherence will also be discussed.
