Program Description
Approximately 25% of patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) will present with metastatic disease at diagnosis, while up to half of patients with localized disease will eventually have disease progression including metastases during their disease course. Pharmacists practicing in oncology settings require knowledge about RCC histology and risk score, as these factors influence treatment options for patients. The treatment paradigm for metastatic RCC has greatly expanded and is shifting the prognosis for patients with the introduction of combination targeted therapies with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and emerging ICI/vascular endothelial growth factor tyrosine kinase inhibitor combinations. However, toxicity profiles and immune-mediated adverse effects associated with use of these agents can increase treatment burden for patients and complicate disease management. This activity will feature patient case discussions to apply considerations for selection of frontline therapies and their ongoing management in patients. Additional challenges contributing to selection of therapy, management of adverse effects, and coordination of care for patients with RCC will be addressed.
