Program Description

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is an acquired immune-mediated disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system and can lead to permanent nerve damage without treatment. Three first-line therapies are currently offered for patients with moderate to severe disabilities and include corticosteroids, immunoglobulin (Ig) therapy, or therapeutic plasma exchange, with varying factors contributing to the selection. Ig therapy is frequently selected as initial therapy for CIDP due to its quick onset of improvement and its more favorable adverse effect profile. Specialty pharmacists play an essential role in caring for patients with CIDP by educating them on the disease, expectations of therapy, adverse effect management, and the importance of adherence. Through this activity, pharmacists will become knowledgeable on available treatments and their role in optimizing therapy to ensure safety and patient satisfaction. Included in this program is a patient perspective interview that will highlight the experience of an individual living with CIDP to help pharmacists understand the patient journey with different treatment options.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Explain the clinical burden and quality of life impact of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and the role of intravenous (IV) and subcutaneous (SC) immunoglobulin (Ig) in optimizing outcomes
• Examine IVIg and SCIg therapies for CIDP, including clinical efficacy and safety data, as well as differences in administration, dosing, time between infusions, and common adverse effects
• Identify patients who should transition from IVIg to SCIg, when appropriate, to improve patient management and optimize outcomes
• Employ strategies to ensure access to treatments for CIDP, address barriers to adherence, and provide education to patients
