Program Description

BCR-ABL1-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) allow most patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) to maintain durable responses, however, these agents are associated with a unique set of challenges, including the toxicities, drug interactions, development of resistance, and treatment nonadherence. This program will review clinical data supporting use of second- and third-generation BCR-ABL1-targeting TKIs for the treatment of relapsed/refractory CML. Panelists will review guideline-recommended strategies for selection of these agents based on patient- and disease-specific characteristics. Considerations for managing TKI therapy for patients with CML who experience inadequate response, resistance, or TKI-related toxicities will also be presented.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Examine new and emerging data in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and its application to clinical practice
  • Identify when switching to alternate tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy is warranted in patients with inadequate response
  • Determine the most common toxicities associated with TKI therapy in patients with CML and strategies for their management
