Program Description
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive disease characterized by muscular weakness in early childhood that progresses to multisystem complications and premature death. The clinical and economic burden on patients and their caregivers is immense. As burden of disease increases, so does the clinical burden and impacts on quality of life (QOL). Treatment of DMD is focused on maintaining the patient’s QOL, delaying disease progression, treating complications, and extending survival. Pharmacists have key roles in the management of DMD to support patients and the multidisciplinary team in adapting treatment to the individual patient and their stage of clinical development. This podcast will outline the role of specialty pharmacists from initial patient consultations through treatment selection and follow-up throughout the patient’s care journey to monitor the efficacy and safety of medications, manage adverse effects, and ensure appropriate regular testing and tracking of patient progress.
