Treatment Advancements and Management Strategies in Bipolar Disorder to Mitigate Challenges to Patient Care

Program Description

Bipolar disorder (BD), a mental health illness that leads to significant shifts in an individual’s mood, energy, and ability to think clearly. BD affects approximately 5.7 million people in the United States. For many, pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies are ineffective; as such, nonadherence to treatment is common in BD, as the management of bipolar disorder is complex and involves several treatment modalities. Pharmacists are integral members of the health care team and can help patients achieve therapeutic goals, promote the use of effective and safe drugs to enhance patients’ quality of life, and ensure prompt and accurate diagnosis of BD through the early identification of risk factors and symptoms. This activity will review current and emerging treatment options for BD, as well as guidelines for its management. Strategies to address the burden of disease for patients will also be discussed.

• Identify pharmacists’ roles in the management of BD across practice settings, including patient counseling, treatment recommendations, and access to therapy
