Therapy Advancements for Chronic Kidney Disease in Patients With Diabetes: A Focus on MRAs

Program Description

It is estimated that 37 million Americans have chronic kidney disease (CKD), with 3 of 4 cases stemming as a result of diabetes or hypertension. Pharmacists can have key roles in the early identification of patients at risk for developing CKD, experiencing disease progression, or experiencing other complications. It is important for pharmacists to be aware of the goals of treatment outlined in clinical guidelines on the management of CKD in patients with diabetes. Despite recommended treatment protocols, patients with diabetes remain at risk of CKD progression and its associated negative impact on quality of life. The recent approval of the first nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA) may reduce complications in comparison with steroidal MRAs and other treatment options. This activity will outline the recently approved and emerging non-steroidal MRAs and their potential impact on slowing the progression of CKD. Strategies for pharmacists to optimize the treatment of CKD in patients with type 2 diabetes to improve patient outcomes and minimize complications will be presented.
