Program Description

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that eventually leads to muscle weakness, atrophy, and eventual paralysis. Early interventions can lead to better management of symptoms and a more comprehensive care plan that can alleviate the burden of ALS on affected patients and their caregivers. Challenges to delivering multidisciplinary ALS care include interruptions in the transition of care between health care professionals, but these can be addressed through supportive therapy management, including specialty pharmacy interventions. Pharmacists within the ALS multidisciplinary care team must be familiar with the latest efficacy and safety data of available and emerging ALS therapies to ensure appropriate use and access to these specialized treatments. The program focuses on the impact of early interventions, the significance of patient-centered care in managing ALS, and the application of disease-modifying therapies to slow disease progression.
