Program Description

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that eventually leads to muscle weakness, atrophy, and eventual paralysis. Early interventions can lead to better management of symptoms and a more comprehensive care plan that can alleviate the burden of ALS on affected patients and their caregivers. Challenges to delivering multidisciplinary ALS care include interruptions in the transition of care between health care professionals, but these can be addressed through supportive therapy management, including specialty pharmacy interventions. Pharmacists within the ALS multidisciplinary care team must be familiar with the latest efficacy and safety data of available and emerging ALS therapies to ensure appropriate use and access to these specialized treatments. This webinar reviews the latest efficacy and safety data of available and emerging therapies for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and the impact of early interventions, the significance of patient-centered care, and the role of specialty pharmacy interventions to slow disease progression.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Explain the pathogenesis associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the disparities and barriers that may impede early diagnosis and clinical intervention, and the impact on patient and caregiver quality of life
• Examine the challenges associated with ALS and the value of the ALS Association’s multidisciplinary care model for the treatment and management of ALS
• Explore the efficacy and safety of FDA-approved and emerging disease-modifying therapies for the treatment and management of ALS, including mechanisms of action, administration, dosing, potential adverse effects, and monitoring parameters
• Identify the role of the specialty pharmacist in making clinical recommendations for the treatment and management of ALS, in educating patients and caregivers about current and emerging therapies, and in monitoring patient response to therapy, adherence, and potential adverse effects
