Program Description
The herpes zoster (HZ) virus, commonly known as shingles, is a reactivation of the varicella zoster virus (VZV), which causes chickenpox. Shingles is a vaccine-preventable disease with 1 currently approved zoster vaccine available for patients at risk. Pharmacists should be equipped to address patient questions about safety and efficacy of the HZ vaccine as well as identify patients who are eligible for HZ vaccination, which now includes individuals aged 19 years and older who are immunocompromised and those receiving certain drugs and treatments, such as patients with cancer. In this expanded patient population, it will be imperative for pharmacists to educate at-risk patients about the disease burden of shingles and the importance of completing the HZ vaccine series. This article will highlight strategies for pharmacists to employ to enhance patient awareness of shingles and provide individualized patient recommendations to increase vaccination rates. This activity will also include patient counseling videos to emphasize key counseling points for patients including addressing vaccine hesitancy.
