Program Description
Pneumococcal disease (PD) can lead to serious complications, particularly in high-risk patients and older adults. Vaccines to prevent PD are continually emerging, with new serotypes being included. These new and emerging vaccines provide an opportunity for pharmacists to play a key role in identifying and educating high-risk patients on the role of vaccinations in the prevention of PD. This activity will provide an update on pneumococcal vaccination recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, with a focus on adult patients. It will also address shared clinical decision-making strategies that can be used by pharmacists in recommending and administering pneumococcal vaccinations. Vaccine hesitancy, strategies to improve vaccination rates, and coadministration with other routine vaccinations will also be discussed.
