The Role of Long-Term Care and Consultant Pharmacists in the Management of Tardive Dyskinesia

Program Description

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a syndrome that generally occurs due to long-term use of certain medications, including antipsychotics, or others that block dopamine receptors. Patients often experience movement disorders as a result. Individuals older than 55 years are at greatest risk for TD, and pharmacists involved in older adult care need to be aware of the incidence of TD and encourage prevention and regular screening. The development of vesicular monoamine transporter-2 (VMAT-2) inhibitors offers a potential solution for older adults with TD. This program will focus on the use of VMAT-2 inhibitors in TD and present long-term safety and efficacy data. Pharmacist interventions on the multidisciplinary team management of patients known to develop TD can include discussion of adverse effects and treatment adherence to optimize outcomes and reduce TD symptoms. This program features a patient’s perspective on the impact and challenges related to TD.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Investigate the impact of untreated tardive dyskinesia (TD), risk factors in older adults, and the associated quality of life burden
• Analyze the clinical data of the vesicular monoamine transporter-2 inhibitors for efficacy and safety along with use in older adult populations
• Identify barriers to optimizing therapy and the role of the pharmacist in patient counseling, monitoring, appropriate dosing, titration, and overall management of older adults with TD
