Program Description
Migraines can present with acute or chronic symptoms and can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, with some individuals experiencing more than 15 migraine days per month. Often, migraine headaches are accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea and/or vomiting, photophobia, or aura. While many people experiencing migraine seek pharmacologic management, overall rates of preventive prescription medications remains low, and a large proportion of patients treated with prescription medications either switch or discontinue treatment. Research on the role of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in migraine has led to many advancements in recent years with new FDA-approved therapies for the treatment and prevention of migraines. To promote adequate management of migraine and improve quality of life for patients, pharmacists need to be familiar with these emerging classes of medications as well as guideline-recommended therapies and monitoring treatment plans for migraine. This activity will detail the importance of providing patient-centered care and review opportunities for pharmacists to assist with appropriate pharmacologic management of patients with migraine.
