Program Description


Patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) and X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) generally present with signs and symptoms of chronic hypophosphatemia including bone pain, weakness, and fractures. These nonspecific symptoms may frequently delay diagnosis and initiation of treatment by months or years. As key members of the multidisciplinary team, pharmacists are optimally positioned to recognize the complexities surrounding available therapies and educate patients about adverse effect management and other challenges they may encounter in managing TIO and XLH with either supplementation or pharmacologic treatment. Newer, targeted therapies have the potential to change the landscape of management of TIO and XLH, making it essential for pharmacists to be familiar with the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and complications associated with these conditions. Pharmacists have an important role in facilitating dosing and administration of therapy for these rare conditions. They must be knowledgeable about the benefits and risks of current and emerging therapy options and treatment strategies for TIO and XLH. This activity will review evolving research in treatment and management of these conditions, and the role of pharmacists in significantly contributing to improving quality of life and reducing health care costs for patients with TIO and XLH.

Educational Objectives

  • Investigate the epidemiology, pathophysiology, commonalities, and challenges associated with tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) and X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH)
  • Illustrate the disease burden of TIO and XLH, as well as challenges and limitations associated with conventional therapies and the impact on patient quality of life
  • Explore the efficacy and safety data associated with new and emerging targeted therapies
  • Identify the role of the pharmacist in making clinical recommendations to improve management and clinical outcomes in those with TIO and XLH
