Program Description
Influenza results in worldwide outbreaks and epidemics, and symptoms can range from mild fatigue to respiratory failure requiring hospitalization. Influenza outbreaks pose significant economic costs on society, such as hospitalization and mortality among adults and even healthy children. Especially in this era of COVID-19, managed care pharmacists must be familiar with the public health burden of influenza and differentiate its symptoms from those of other respiratory infections. To reduce the public health burden of influenza, managed care professionals must also recognize patient populations in which influenza infection can cause severe complications. Early intervention with antivirals can have public health benefits and improved clinical outcomes for patients at high risk of influenza-related complications, as well as potential cost savings for patients and the healthcare system. Within the health system, managed care pharmacists must ensure the availability of antivirals and work with clinicians to promote their safe and effective use. This activity will review the most up-to-date recommendations and guidelines from the CDC and the Infectious Diseases Society of America for the 2020-2021 influenza season.
