Program Description
Pneumococcal disease is a leading cause of death and disability in elderly patients and in those with certain medical conditions. Available vaccines for pneumococcal disease are identified based on the number of serotypes they protect against, with several newly approved vaccines offering additional protection. With the recent approvals of the PCV15 and PCV20 vaccines, the recommendations for adult and pediatric vaccination schedules have been updated. Pharmacists are central in sharing evidence-based information about the impact of vaccines on the prevention of pneumococcal disease and associated complications as well as identifying patients who are eligible for vaccination under these updated recommendations. The discussion will also include key highlights from clinical trial data with a focus on pharmacist-led strategies to combat vaccine hesitancy and improve uptake of pneumococcal vaccines.
