Program Description
More than 2 million fractures occur each year in the United States due to osteoporosis. Increasing age and female sex are significant risk factors for developing osteoporosis. Through pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions, pharmacists can be integral in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and its related fractures. This panel discussion will center on updates to the 2020 AACE/ACE guidelines for osteoporosis, as well as advances in treatment options and the role of pharmacists in supporting screening recommendations for patients to identify fracture risk. Indications, dosing, and clinical trial information for select available and emerging oral and parenteral therapies for osteoporosis will be discussed. Expert panelists will share tips to improve communication with patients about initiation of therapy and counseling points to educate patients on the importance of maintaining a bone healthy lifestyle and preventing development of fractures related to osteoporosis. This program features a patient perspective interview that will highlight the experience and challenges of a patient living with osteoporosis.
