Program Description
Across the United States, up to 70 million people are affected by acid-related disorders, including Helicobacter pylori infection, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and its more serious form, erosive esophagitis. Acid-related disorders result in greater health-related quality of life burden for patients, and treatment of these conditions has been limited by antibiotic resistance, adverse effects, treatment regimens, and disease recurrence. The recent approval of a potassium-competitive acid blocker (PCAB) with a differentiated mechanism of action from proton pump inhibitors may overcome these challenges. Pharmacists must understand current practice guideline recommendations for treatment and prevention of complications of acid-related disorders as well as the safety and efficacy data for PCAB therapy and ongoing clinical studies for its use across other digestive diseases. Dosing recommendations, management of potential adverse effects and drug interactions, and counseling points for pharmacists to improve medication adherence and health-related quality of life using PCAB therapy will also be addressed.
