Program Description
Once a fatal condition, HIV is now considered a manageable and preventable chronic illness, though it requires a lifetime of medical care. Over time, the economic burden of HIV has shifted from direct costs of hospitalizations associated with advanced disease to costs associated with outpatient visits, lab tests, and antiretroviral therapy (ART). ART is the cornerstone of therapy for active, chronic HIV infection, and treatment with these agents targets to decrease HIV RNA viral load to levels that are undetectable; however, choice of antiviral is complicated by pill burden and may further vary based on patient-specific factors and comorbidities. Managed care professionals have an important role in collaborating with clinicians to help people living with HIV remain adherent to their prescribed ART regimen and be engaged in their medical care. Pharmacists must recognize the potential advantages and emerging data for novel long-acting injectable and implantable ART formulations that may prevent treatment failure, improve adherence, and, ultimately, improve quality of life for people living with HIV.

Target Audience: Managed care payers, pharmacy directors, pharmacy benefit managers, specialty pharmacy directors, and any other pharmacist and/or healthcare professional interested in therapies for HIV treatment and prevention.
Type of Activity: Application
