Program Description

The skin is the body’s largest organ and first line of protection against infection or damage. The first step in treating skin conditions is understanding the composition of each layer of skin and the role of proteins and lipids in maintaining skin barrier function. Ceramides are 1 of 9 lipids that occur naturally in the epidermis and have an essential role in improving skin hydration. As ceramides are commonly found in over-the-counter moisturizers, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians must be knowledgeable about their benefits to properly educate patients and assist them in the selection of skin care products. This first webinar in the curriculum series will provide an overview for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians of the most common types and functions of ceramides produced in the skin. Additionally, recommendations from the American Academy of Dermatology will be reviewed for treatment of common skin conditions as well as management with ceramide-containing cleansers and moisturizers.
