Program Description
An estimated 100,000 individuals in the United States are living with sickle cell disease (SCD), which is a group of inherited red blood cell (RBC) disorders that cause RBCs to form a sickle or crescent shape and die prematurely or contribute to vaso-occlusive crises due to the obstructions caused by the sickled cells. Patients with SCD often experience challenges including those associated with access to treatment, life-threatening complications, and reduced quality of life that can make disease management difficult. If not managed properly, the chronic state and breakdown of RBCs in SCD can progress to organ damage and failure. This program will present the safety and efficacy of newer and emerging treatments for SCD, including potential gene therapies that aim to increase hemoglobin levels. Pharmacists play a critical role as members of the multidisciplinary team and can assist with increasing awareness of new and emerging therapies for SCD and improving the care of patients. Considerations for educating patients on SCD and potential treatment options, as well as important medication-specific pearls, such as addressing potential safety concerns to prevent adverse outcomes in patients, will be discussed.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Explain the role of hemolysis and anemia in the development of end organ damage and disease progression in sickle cell disease (SCD)
- Examine newer and emerging treatments to address the underlying disease state in SCD, including the mechanism of action, safety and efficacy data, place in therapy, and real-world utility
- Identify effective strategies in the management of SCD and the role of the pharmacist on the multidisciplinary team
