As a complex, chronic disease, obesity requires lifelong management. Because weight regain and metabolic complications frequently follow treatment discontinuation, ongoing strategies are essential to support long-term patient success. This webinar highlights approaches for pharmacists to address the pathophysiology and clinical burden of obesity. Faculty will synthesize key concepts from “The Educated Pharmacist—Weighing In” curriculum, guiding participants to apply current guidelines and clinical evidence when selecting appropriate candidates for glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide/GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy based on obesity severity, cardiorenal-metabolic comorbidities, and patient-specific factors. Learners will explore how to develop individualized treatment plans incorporating precise medication selection, dose titration, administration techniques, adverse effect management, and nonpharmacologic interventions. The discussion will explore practical methods to overcome patient-, provider-, and system-level barriers to long-term obesity therapy persistence. Through a faculty-led patient case discussion, participants will examine real-world approaches to implement pharmacist-led strategies that enhance treatment initiation, persistence, and adherence through patient-centered counseling, motivational interviewing, and structured follow-up.

Educational Objectives
After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Explain the pathophysiology and clinical burden of obesity and the impact of clinical inertia on the initiation and optimization of evidence-based treatment
- Apply current guidelines and clinical evidence to identify appropriate candidates for GLP-1 receptor agonist and dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy based on obesity severity, cardiorenal-metabolic comorbidities, expected benefits, safety considerations, and patient-specific factors
- Explore individualized treatment plans that incorporate medication selection, dose titration, administration technique, adverse effect mitigation and management, and nonpharmacologic interventions
- Identify pharmacist-led strategies to address barriers to treatment initiation, persistence, and long-term adherence through patient-centered counseling, motivational interviewing, and follow-up
