The Burden of Anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease and Treatment Challenges

Program Description

Current estimates indicate chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects nearly 15% of US adults. Recognizing clinical signs and guideline parameters as well as patient prognosis is important to guide decisions for testing and treatment for CKD complications. Pharmacists, as part of a multidisciplinary team within health care settings, can assist in identifying patients that should be screened for early CKD. A common complication of CKD is anemia, which can be associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, mortality, and hospitalizations, as well as a decreased quality of life. Despite the complications and burden of anemia associated with CKD, there remains issues and challenges with appropriate treatment. This module will provide an overview of anemia in CKD and explore strategies pharmacists can implement for early screening and prevention for patients.
