Targeted Therapies for the Management of Eosinophilic Esophagitis Across the Life Cycle: The Role of the Pharmacist in Patient Identification and Optimization, featuring a Patient Perspective

Program Description

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory disease of the esophagus resulting from a combination of environmental factors, allergen sensitization, epithelial barrier dysfunction, and genetic predisposition that leads to dysphagia and other symptoms that impact quality of life. Current management of EoE consists of ongoing dietary control in combination with pharmacologic and endoscopic treatment. There are emerging treatments that address the inflammatory pathways underlying the disease process, with biologics that are recently FDA approved or in late-stage clinical trials offering new potential therapeutic options for patients. From childhood to adulthood, pharmacists play an important role both in assisting patients with symptoms of EoE as well as in ensuring these patients are receiving optimal treatment. Through this activity, pharmacists will be able to educate patients with EoE on appropriate available treatments to improve quality of life and patient outcomes as well as reduce associated burdens. A patient perspective interview included in this program will highlight the experience of an individual living with EoE and provide insights on their experience with treatment.

• Examine safety and efficacy data for novel therapies for the management of EoE
• Explore evidence-based guidelines and identification of patients with EoE across the life cycle who would benefit from targeted therapy
• Identify opportunities for pharmacists to improve patient management, coordination of care, and access to emerging treatments for EoE to reduce the clinical and economic burden
