This activity was originally broadcast live at the 2022 Asembia Specialty Pharmacy Summit.
Program Description
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is an inherited cardiac disease characterized by abnormally thick or enlarged heart muscle. Current treatments manage and prevent exacerbations of HCM symptoms, but research into HCM pathophysiology has led to the development of targeted therapies addressing the hypercontractility and underlying disease process. Patients with HCM experience substantial symptoms, the most concerning of which is sudden cardiac death, that negatively impact the patient’s overall quality of life and contribute to increased hospitalizations and costs of care. The pending approval of a first-in-class cardiac myosin inhibitor has the potential to improve patients’ health status and will open important avenues for pharmacists to facilitate access to this agent. This program will review treatment guidelines and safety and efficacy data for existing and emerging treatment modalities in the care of patients with HCM. As integral members of the health care team, it is imperative that pharmacists are knowledgeable about the challenges associated with the management of HCM as well as efficacy and safety data for emerging new therapies that treat the underlying causes to improve clinical outcomes for patients.
