Program Description
Hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer accounts for 80% of new breast cancer cases, and treatment often involves endocrine therapy and a CDK 4/6 inhibitor. However, resistance to endocrine-based therapy remains a challenge. The PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway is a key target for this subtype, leading to a rise in new inhibitors with new adverse effects, such as hyperglycemia. Data from clinical trials and real-world studies will be presented to illustrate the incidence and clinical presentation of hyperglycemia with these therapies. As there is limited guidance on first-line therapies, management of hyperglycemia in patients with HR+ breast cancer receiving PI3K and AKT inhibitors remains challenging. Expert faculty will discuss strategies for hyperglycemia prevention, lifestyle interventions, and factors informing the selection of appropriate anti-hyperglycemic agents. The importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the role of clinical oncology pharmacists in preventing, identifying, and managing hyperglycemia associated with these therapies will be emphasized throughout this session.
