Program Description
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neuromuscular disease characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, which leads to substantial physical disability and is associated with a high mortality rate. Although there is no cure, there are currently 3 FDA-approved therapeutic classes of medication that provide symptomatic relief and slow disease progression for those with ALS. Managed care pharmacists must consider factors such as drug acquisition and reimbursement costs, expanded use of pharmacoeconomic models, and market and regulatory changes, as well as remain up-to-date on new therapy approvals, drug safety warnings, and guideline recommendations so patients with ALS may receive individualized therapy. This activity will provide managed care pharmacists with the knowledge of the current landscape of ALS management including unmet needs related to optimization of care, evaluate real-world data, and provide considerations for future drug approvals.
