Program Description
About one-third of persons with diabetes present with skin disorders, many of which occur prior to receiving a diagnosis of diabetes. As the disease and dermatologic manifestations progress, they can be associated with various negative health implications such as xerosis, skin lesions, ulcerations, and diabetic foot. Prevention of dry skin and its associated complications is an important part of diabetes care regimens. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can be central in the management and prevention of skin complications by helping persons with diabetes understand skin-related changes, navigate options, and provide product recommendations to improve skin barrier function. This activity will examine the role of ceramides in the maintenance of skin barrier function and review counseling points pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can share with persons with diabetes about the critical nature of cleansing and moisturizing skin care routines with OTC ceramide-containing products.
