Activity Overview
Pharmacy technicians and other health care workers who handle, compound, dispose of, or clean equipment used with hazardous drugs are at risk for adverse effects. Oral therapeutic options have become available alongside intravenous infusions and contain similar risk of adverse effects if incorrectly handled by a health care worker. As pharmacy technicians are involved in many aspects of drug preparation and medication delivery, knowledge of the classes of hazardous drugs, available guidelines, and documented safety practices for handling hazardous oral medications is critical to maintain their health and promote safe practices within their workplace. Requirements for safe storage, disposal, and other steps in the delivery of hazardous drugs from leading organizations are discussed.
Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- List types of exposure and potential hazards from accidental exposure
- Recognize classes of drugs with examples that require safe handling
- Review specific processes including storage, preparation, dispensing, and waste of hazardous drugs to reduce exposure and risk
