Program Description
Anemia is a common complication of CKD and is associated with poor clinical outcomes and leads to a substantial burden on patients and healthcare systems, particularly when left untreated or undertreated. It is often poorly diagnosed and undertreated in patients with early-stage CKD. Early detection and effective management of anemia in the setting of CKD is needed to minimize the debilitating effects it may have on patients’ quality of life. Traditional treatment strategies are limited due to adverse complications, highlighting the need for novel therapies. The identified gaps indicate a need to educate pharmacists about current and emerging strategies to treat and manage anemia of CKD. Continuing professional education will improve pharmacist’s knowledge of this condition and ability to translate evidence about available treatments that may be initiated to manage the effects of anemia of CKD. Application of this knowledge including evidenced based treatment and individualized patient education will enable pharmacists to enhance patients’ health-related quality of life and reduce direct and indirect costs of the disease.
