Program Description
Each year in the United States, nearly 170,000 older adults are hospitalized due to a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. RSV commonly presents as an upper respiratory infection and, in the older adult population, complications requiring hospitalization can be exacerbated by comorbid conditions, such as cardiovascular disease. Current treatment for RSV mainly includes supportive care; however, in the absence of effective treatment options, there is an urgent need for pharmacists to educate the older adult population about RSV prevention strategies to reduce RSV-associated morbidity and mortality. Fortunately, several RSV vaccine candidates have been developed and are in clinical trials. These vaccine candidates are in various stages of development, but could offer a potential method to help minimize the burden of RSV in vulnerable populations. This activity features counseling vignettes that will aid pharmacists with identifying populations with risk factors for RSV infection, review strategies to promote awareness of the severity of RSV, and facilitate patient education regarding the importance of vaccinations. Also included is a tear-out that can be quickly referenced to help reinforce the information covered in this activity.
