Topics

Oncology

This activity was originally broadcast as part of the 2023 Directions in Oncology Pharmacy conference.

      • Note: The patient case discussion portion of the program also includes discussion on ovarian cancer.

Program Description
Until recently, platinum doublet chemotherapy has been the standard of care in patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer as there were no optimal treatment options after progression on first-line therapy. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have entered the treatment landscape of endometrial cancer with proven anti-tumor activity as both monotherapy and in combination. Oncology pharmacists must be familiar with treatment sequencing and individualized management of ICI-based therapies for patients with advanced or recurrent disease based on patient factors and disease characteristics. The novel mechanisms of action of ICIs also present potential for delayed-onset immune-related adverse effects (irAEs), such as endocrinopathies. The program will review evidence-based strategies for the integration of ICIs into current regimens and treatment paradigms for endometrial cancer. A patient case discussion will follow the presentation and address guideline recommendations for the management of irAEs and strategies for oncology pharmacists to provide supportive care to patients with endometrial cancer.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Investigate the relationship between mismatch repair status, microsatellite instability, and treatment response in advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer
  • Analyze recent and emerging clinical evidence supporting the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors in the treatment of advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer
  • Employ evidence-based strategies for the prevention and management of immune-mediated endocrinopathies to individualize treatment protocols for patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer
  • Apply knowledge of genomic mutations, clinical evidence, treatment guidelines, and immune-mediated toxicity management to real-world patient case scenarios
