Program Description
Every year in the United States, over 80 million people are prescribed medication for acute pain. Without adequate understanding of pain assessments, pain conditions, or their treatments, these patients may continue to experience diminished quality of life or chronic pain. Initiating therapies that address the underlying pathophysiology of pain can lead to improved pain control and avoid risks associated with conventional therapies, such as addiction with opioids. Emerging therapies for pain management focus on novel targets within the pain signaling pathways to provide effective pain relief with fewer adverse effects, but these multimodal, non-opioid therapies are often underused. In this program, expert panelists will share perspectives on pharmacists’ involvement in medication reconciliation and the management of acute pain, considering top challenges regarding treatment modalities.
