Relieving Symptoms of Allergic Disorders: Supportive Strategies for Pharmacy Technicians

Program Description

Allergic disorders include several inflammatory conditions, spanning from atopic dermatitis to food allergy and asthma. Pharmacy technicians have important supportive care roles in assisting patients to identify triggers and working with the pharmacist to set patient goals for symptom management. In some patients, exacerbation of an allergy can result in medical emergencies, and pharmacy technicians should be aware of the potential for these life-threatening reactions as well as how to prevent them with pharmacologic or nonpharmacologic treatment approaches. This article will review common presentations of allergic disorders as well as strategies to avoid allergy triggers.

• Recognize common triggers and symptoms associated with the aggravation of allergic disorders
• List common prescription and over-the-counter medications used in the treatment and management of allergic disorders
• Review common appearances of skin-related allergic reactions and potential triggers of these reactions
